Obtaining information

The Right to Information Act has become a powerful tool for ordinary citizens to extract information.

When a housing cooperative society in Kozhikode refused to part with a copy of its bylaws to one of its members for submitting it along with his loan application to the bank, he approached the office of the Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Kozhikode. Along with the application filed at the registrar's office he also submitted the challan receipt for Rs.10 that he had deposited at the treasury as fee for the information. In three days, the loan applicant received the copy of the bylaws.
