The Chavara Cultural Centre will stage the premier of the theatre version of Paulo Coelho's famous work, Alchemist, on Saturday. The play follows Santiago, the shepherd boy of Andalusia in Spain, and his dream of unearthing a treasure. His search takes him, and the play, through a spectrum of lives. The play has been conceived and directed by G. Ajayan, who also plays the part of Santiago. The 90-minute play is also a statement of the Chavara Cultural Centre's commitment to promote art. "In this play, I have concentrated on individual characters. Each of the nine characters that Santiago meets during his journey has stories of their own, dreams of their own. In that sense, the nine segments are short plays," says Ajayan. The characters, be it the glass merchant or the gypsy woman or Fatima, Santiago's lover, all pursue their dreams. And these different strands are linked by the pursuit of Santiago. Only to realise that the treasure was always there, where he began his journey from. "Actors chipped in with their contribution, to complement the immense support given by Chavara Cultural Centre, in realising this project," the young theatre person says. A key element of the play will be the live music performed by Hisdua, a city-based music band. Around 35 artistes, including the musicians, are coming together for the play. The play will be presented at Kerala Fine Arts Hall on Saturday at 6.30 p.m.
