Sinister plan

The Varanasi blasts are clearly part of a sinister plan to damage our secular social fabric. On the other hand, it is appreciable that our citizens have remained calm in the face of such provocation. Political parties too should come together and support the Government in this moment of crisis. Only then can the evil of terrorism be effectively dealt with.

Ajay G. Pise,
Manipal, Karnataka

It was Varanasi on Tuesday. Tomorrow some other city could be targeted. A country that was a haven for people of all religions and communities is becoming a hell.

K. Pradeep,
Chennai

As pointed out in the editorial, `Facing terrorism' (March 9), the lack of an institutional mechanism for sharing of information adds to the woes of the authorities. A Central nodal agency with satellite connectivity to centres across the country is the need of the hour.

B. Rajasekaran,
Bangalore

Within a few hours or days of a terrorist strike, a "terrorist" is either arrested or gunned down in "an encounter." Then the police put the blame on an outfit such as Al-Qaeda. All this seems to be becoming a routine. But what is being done to find the mastermind behind these attacks? Some really tough measures are needed.

Amjad K. Maruf,
Mumbai

It is not the first time that a bomb has been exploded at a place of worship. It is time for the Government to act with a firm hand.

Tharcius S. Fernando,
Chennai

The obvious intent of the terrorists was to create panic and demoralise the people. However, they will never succeed in dividing our pluralistic society. The perpetrators of the crime should be hunted down and severely punished.

M. Nazeeruddin,
Kurnool, A.P.

Yet another bomb blast has occurred at one of India's most sacred places. The authorities should not stop with mouthing appeals. Adequate security should be provided throughout the year without slackening even a wee bit.

V. Ramamurthi,
Tiruchi, T.N.

The UPA Government deserves compliments for its swift action in the aftermath of the blasts. Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Congress president Sonia Gandhi rushed to Varanasi to take stock of the situation and to provide succour to the victims.

Quilon S. Krishnamoorthy,
Chennai

Currently, it would appear that the anti-social groups are winning. But one should not lose one's nerve. The collective will of a billion Indians should be enough to tackle the menace.

M. Tejaswi Kumar,
Hyderabad

One is puzzled at the terrorists' psychology. They cannot hope to achieve any of their goals because truly religious persons will not extend support to such barbaric acts.

Rameeza A. Rasheed,
Chennai

Two of the greatest evils facing mankind are religion and nation. Unless the human mind is freed of these two illusory concepts, there will not be peace in the world.

S.P. Asokan,
Chennai
