Corrections and clarifications

  • In "Call to register protest against cartoons in peaceful manner" (March 8, 2006, page 10, Chennai city), a resolution adopted at a Chennai rally condemned the caricaturing of the Prophet and demolition of the Samarra mosque, we reported. There is a clear difference between a mosque and a shrine, a reader points out. The reference is to the Askariya shrine in Samarra, Iraq. A mosque is a place of prayer, a shrine a monument to a revered person.

  • A case of the reverse; the answer right and the clue wrong. In The Guardian Quick Crossword - 8878 (MetroPlus, March 4, 2006), 3 Down should be: Capital of the Uzbek Republic (8), which is Tashkent, the solution that appeared on March 6. Georgia's capital (the clue), is Tbilisi.

  • Are there 191 United Nations member-states, as we said? ("Delegates agree on agenda for youth summit, March 3, 2006) Or 193, asks a reader. Yes, there are 191 members of the United Nations. There is still one country (the Vatican City) that is independent and has chosen not to become a member of the U.N.

  • Despite chlorination, the Corporation in Salem is finding it difficult to maintain the normal level of 0.22 ppm (parts per million) in the water, we said. ("Water treatment: Salem to adopt silver ionisation process", March 8, 2006, page 1, Tamil Nadu edition). A reader objected saying it should be particles per million and should not be in decimals. Russ Rowlett (Director of the Center of Mathematics and Science Education, Clinical Professor of Education and an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics, University of North Carolina, U.S.) came to our rescue, saying, "the term `parts per million' is commonly used, and there is no requirement that measurements be expressed in whole numbers. The reader is incorrect. However, the measurement should indicate whether the proportion is by weight or by volume."

  • An error in the conversion software (PDF creation) left blank the Rupee-Dollar conversion graph ("Markets" column, Business page, March 8, 2006) in some editions, an omission that brought in queries from many readers.
