VIJAYAWADA: Three crest gates of Prakasam Barrage were lifted by one foot to release 20,000 cusecs of water downstream here for a few hours on Thursday. According to Irrigation Department sources, the barrage received a surplus of 21,175 cusecs of water from rivulets that empty into the Krishna River in the inter-catchment between Prakasam Barrage and Nagarjuna Sagar. The rivulets went into spate after rains in their catchment areas on Wednesday. The gates were closed after inflow into the reservoir decreased at 5 p.m. About 9,000 cusecs of water is being released into the canals going into the delta. While 5,400 cusecs are being released into Krishna Easter Main canal for the irrigation of standing crop in Krishna and West Godavari districts. Another 3,300 cusecs of water is being released into Krishna Western main canal for irrigating standing crop in Guntur and Prakasam district.
