TIRUNELVELI: The Confederation of Women Organisations in this district has urged the State and Central Governments to ban posters, web sites, publications and television programmes, "which show women in poor light."

It has also appealed to the governments to introduce Bills in the legislative bodies to give 33 per cent reservation for women. In a resolution passed at a meeting held at Palayamkottai on Thursday after a rally, they said women law-enforcers in plainclothes should be deployed wherever movement of women was high.

All cases against women pending in police stations and Revenue Divisional Offices should be disposed of in time and the culprits involved in the crime against women should be given maximum punishment. People, who dare to defy Dowry Harassment Act, should be given the utmost penalty.

The legislations enacted to curb domestic violence, attack on Dalits, tribal women and sexual harassment in workplaces should be implemented strictly and the victims given due compensation.

Apart from banning induction of heavy and modern equipment in farming, construction and other unorganised sectors, the governments should give due compensation to the labourers who lost their job due to automation. As the sale of IMFL hit the downtrodden badly, sale of alcohol should be prohibited, they said. Coordinator of the confederation Ponnuthaai flagged off the rally, which was led by Rev. Sr. Valarmathi.
