MALAPPURAM: Kunhali Marakkar Centre for West Asian Studies and Indian Ocean Studies, Calicut University, will organise a national seminar on `India's energy security and the relevance of the Indian Ocean region' at the university seminar complex on March 18. The seminar will be held under the University Grants Commission's area studies programme in collaboration with the Chair for Maritime Studies, Calicut University. K. Santhanam, former director of the Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis, New Delhi, will inaugurate the seminar. K.R. Singh, visiting professor at the Chair for Maritime Studies and Research, will speak on `Global energy insecurity'.
Energy security
Sheobonti Ray Dadwal from the Institute for Defence and Analysis, New Delhi, will speak on the problems that India is likely to face in future in the field of energy security. R.H. Iyer from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, will present a paper on the future of nuclear power in India. R.V.G. Menon will speak on non-conventional sources of energy. Cdr. P.K. Ghosh from National Maritime Foundation, New Delhi, will speak on the maritime dimensions of the energy security of India.
Significance
E.K.G. Nambiar, convener of the seminar, said that the topic had more significance today than ever before because of the growing dependence on imported natural gases. Peace and stability of the Indian Ocean region were of vital importance to India, he said.
