SHIMLA: The Nepalese People's Right Protection Committee has expressed dismay over the ill-treatment meted out to its members by the Himachal police and the State administration. General secretary of the association D.P. Sapkota told mediapersons here on Thursday that his association had nothing to do with the Maoist movement in Nepal. Mr. Sapkota said activists of the Right's Protection Committee were being harassed by the Shimla Police and tortured. By doing so the State was violating the peace and friendship treaty of 1950. The total apple economy of the State was dependent on the Nepalese migrant workers. He said some stray incidents of violence involving Nepal citizens here were being linked to the democratic movement by some vested interests. He termed this "highly unfortunate." Seeking help from the Indian intelligentsia, human rights activists and media, he said the organisational activities of the non-resident Nepalese were increasing in India and the membership was about to reach the target of 2 lakhs. The membership of the Committee had reached 10,000 in Himachal, he claimed. On the situation in Nepal, he said at least 80 per cent of the population and 85 percent of the area in the country were under the direct control of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoists).
