Village spread on college campus
Staff Reporter
The MGR Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology will conduct `Gramathu Virundhu' (a village food mela) on Friday on its Valasaravakkam campus.
Beginning with `neeragaram', a starter, visitors can sample 40 traditional dishes including those made of `naatu kozhi', dried fish, `nandu' (crab) and mutton; and `kamarkattu' (a sweet), `kadalai urundai' (peanut candy) and `thovayal' (a type of chutney).
The college lawn will be given a village atmosphere with the setting up of thatched huts, bullock carts, teashops, idli and parotta shops, and `thanneer pandals' (water sheds). Food will be served in mud utensils. The festival is open to the public.
A folk cultural programme with `Karagattam', `Kalaiattam', `Kavadiattam' and `Mayilattam' performances will also be held at the venue.
