Lorry owners allege harassment

`Police, transport officials imposing heavy penalties'

Rajahmundry: The inter-State lorry owners associations have alleged that the police and motor transport officials were harassing them by imposing heavy penalties and putting them to many hardships.

A meeting of six State associations -- Andhra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu -- was held here in APSEB Employees Kalyanamantapam, which was presided over by AP Lorry Owners Association general secretary M.V. Subbarao. About 400 representatives from the six States attended the meeting.

Orissa border police

Most lorry owners complained about the attitude of the Orissa border police, transport and check-post officials who, they said, were compounding mechanical tax up to Rs. 3,000 from a heavy vehicle which was just Rs.100 in 1989.

Mr. Subbarao said there was no protection for lorry drivers, cleaners and also the load in transport, in Orissa. Dacoit gangs were looting them, he said, and police refusing even to register cases. He asked the State Government to put in a word to the neighbouring State to give protection to all heavy vehicles having national permit, while in Orissa.

The meeting also discussed issues relating to motor vehicle inspectors' harassment and other problems.

Ch. Venkateswara Rao, secretary of the Godavari National Permit Lorry Welfare Association, Ch. Anjaneya Prasad and others spoke.
