Kudumbasree plan to set up poultry units

Staff Reporter

Aims at generating a sustainable source of income for women

KOCHI: The Kudumbasree poverty eradication mission plans to train 280 women by the end of March to set up poultry units in groups of five under a new initiative by the mission.

The project aims at leveraging the Kudumbasree networking to procure chicks and sell eggs so as to build up a sustainable source of income for the women under the programme.

The training has been spread across the State. Thirty women each will be trained in the districts of Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam and Kozhikode. Forty each will be trained in the districts of Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram.

The activity groups, being set up under the 50,000-employment generation scheme, will be backed by the infrastructure being provided by the Kudumbasree mission.

The initiative is based on the premise that Kerala's egg and poultry meat requirements are met by import from the neighbouring States where large-scale suppliers are able to control the prices.

It is expected that using the networking strengths of Kudumbasree neighbourhood groups and area development societies, a wide chain of poultry units can be built avoiding the need for large-scale infrastructure to make an impact in the poultry market in the State.

A-day-old chicks will be delivered by hatcheries that are locally identified to the poultry units run by women in groups of five and who have undergone the training provided by the Kudumbasree mission. Then grown birds in turn will be supplied to the local development societies and neighbourhood groups under the mission.

Initially, about 10 layer bird units are planned in each district and about 3,000 chicks are expected to be reared each month. The eggs are expected to be supplied to schoolchildren under the nutrition supplementary programme.
