This Day That Age
Archbishop Makarios, leader of the movement in Cyprus for union with Greece, was on March 9 deported by Britain and removed to an unknown destination along with three other priests of the island. The British action was the signal for anti-British demonstrations in Athens and other Greek cities and there were clashes with the police in the capital and Salonika. The Greek Government recalled its Ambassador in London and lodged a protest with the U.N. Security Council. The deportation orders on Archbishop Makarios and three others were signed by the Governor, Sir John Harding, under the Emergency Regulations. British paratroopers, meanwhile, rigorously searched the Archbishop's home in Nicosia. He was to have left by plane for Athens in the afternoon. But he disappeared on the way to the airport. One report said his car was escorted to a waiting helicopter, in which he was then flown in the direction of Kyrenia, north coast port. An official statement said the four men had already left the island by air for a destination "to be announced later."
