Undesirable move

The news report, `Bid to save Jaya Bachchan' (March 10), makes for distressing reading. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly's hurried passing of the U.P. State Legislature (Prevention of Disqualification) Act 1971 (Amendment) Bill is clearly an attempt to save several SP leaders, including Ms. Bachchan and Amar Singh, from disqualification. This is an undesirable move. The powers vested in the States are being misused or abused to circumvent the laws and to give undue protection to politicians.

S. Bakthavathsalan,
Chennai

The passing of the bill by the Uttar Pradesh Assembly proves that in our country any government can twist the Constitution to its benefit.

Devanshu Bajpai,
New Delhi

The lofty ideal enshrined in the Constitution against MPs and MLAs occupying offices of profit "to ensure that legislators do not come under the obligation of the executive through receiving pecuniary or other benefit from it" is a tall order for present-day politicians. The principle enshrined in the Constitution will be satisfied only when the whole problem of corruption is tackled and not by attending only to the so-called offices of profit.

V. Krishnan,
Chennai
