Probe irregularities, says Power Corporation chief

Special Correspondent

Corrupt practices by officials alleged

  • He ordered probe based on an unsigned petition from a staff
  • There are irregularities both in purchase and award of works
  • Lt Governor has forwarded the petition to Vigilance and Anti Corruption for action

PONDICHERRY: Non official chairman of Government owned Power Corporation (situated in the Karaikal district) L. Joseph Mariadoss said here on Friday that he had presented a petition to Lt. Governor M. M. Lakhera on March 3 seeking a probe into "various irregularities and corrupt practices indulged in by two officials." Mr. Mariadoss in a press release stated that he had received an "unsigned petition" from one of the staff of the Corporation in Karaikal alleging several malpractices in the purchase of spare parts and chemicals and maintenance of stocks. He had immediately asked the then managing director Sankararaman to inspect and present a report.

Although the official had inspected the plant, he did not give any written report. In the meanwhile Mr. Sankararaman had been transferred to Electricity, his parent department. Mr. Mariadoss said he had asked the succeeding managing director R. Dattatrayulu to hold an inspection in the plant and also in its administrative wing in Karaikal.

    Report presented

Mr. Dattatrayulu had presented a report stating that there were irregularities and corrupt practices under the leadership of the former managing director Sankararaman and the executive engineer (mechanical) Santosh Ramachandran as purchases of spares, maintenance of stocks and payments were under their financial powers. The chairman also alleged that in addition to these two officials there was also involvement of former managing director Muthunarayanan (who had since retired from the service). Chairman said that there were grave irregularities and malpractices for the last two years both in purchase and award of works.

The Lt Governor had forwarded the petition to Vigilance and Anti Corruption wing for action, he noted.
