CHANDIGARH : In view of the public hue and cry over a controversial programme telecast by a private television channel, the Punjab Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution that at no cost would the hard-earned peace in the State be allowed to be disturbed by nefarious forces. Moving the resolution immediately after question hour, the Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, condemned the "distorted and in-correct picture of law and order in Punjab presented in a section of media.'' He said that programme which had interviews of five "militant ideologues'' presented a highly distorted and at times an incorrect and incoherent picture. The Chief Minister stressed that the entire episode was engineered and directed at maligning the present Government and the people of Punjab. Capt Singh rejected the demand of the Opposition, especially the Shiromani Akali Dal, to institute an inquiry by a judge of the High Court or the CBI, to probe the design behind a programme which projected that `Khalistan' would become a reality in 2007. He described the Akali demand as a "political gimmick''.
