House asks State to take up Sarabjeet case

Staff Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Assembly on Friday passed a resolution urging the State Government to take up with the Union Government the issue of Sarabjeet Singh, an Indian citizen who faces death sentence after his appeal was rejected by the Pakistan Supreme Court.

The resolution was moved by the Leader of Opposition, Parkash Singh Badal. He said that the only option left was seeking clemency from the President of Pakistan.

Mr. Badal urged the Deputy Speaker, Darbari Lal, who was presiding over the House, to request the State Government to take up this matter on an urgent basis. Sarabjeet Singh's family still lives in a border village falling in Amritsar district.

While the Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, was not present in the House, the Deputy Chief Minister, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, sharing Mr. Badal's concern assured that the Punjab Government would pursue the matter.

However, when Mr. Badal insisted that the House should pass a resolution to this effect, Congress legislator and former Deputy Speaker, Bir Devinder Singh pointed out that as Mr. Badal's was a non-official resolution, the Government should move one of its own.
