Haystack sells like hot cakes now in Erode

Yield good; farmers happy over price

ERODE: There has been an appreciable demand for haystack in Thadapalli and Arakkankottai ayacut areas. It sells like hot cakes.

In Thadapalli and Arakkankottai ayacuts paddy crop has been raised on 25,000 acres as second crop and the farmers got encouraging paddy yield recently. It was attributed to proper supply of water in the canals and also there was no rain during the harvest season.

Heavy rain

During the first harvest in November, there was heavy rain and the haystack was not fit for cattle consumption.

This year, however, there was good quantity of haystack and the farmers got enough quantity of green fodder for milch animals.

Now the milk producers, having milch animals, are purchasing dried haystack and storing them for summer.

The milk producers buy the haystack at Rs 10 to Rs 13 per bundle, Rs 2 more than the usual price.

Farm workers

A landowner may get Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,200 for the haystack collected from an acre.

The agricultural labourers are also getting reasonable price for collection and bundling the haystack.

One of the farmers, Mr Eswaran said that they were getting a better price for haystack than paddy.
