NCC needs camping site in the city

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The absence of a common NCC camping site is a major disadvantage for students in Chennai, said Lt. Col. M.N.Hussain, who headed a team of NCC cadets at a camp held in Thanjavur recently. "Every time we hold a camp, we run around to educational institutions requesting them to give us space. Not many heads of institutions come forward to lend their campus for the conduct of camps. If we have a permanent space of our own, it will be a helpful," said Col Hussain, requesting the State Government to allot space.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, Group Commander, NCC Group, Madras `A', K. Bhaskar, said the team from Chennai was adjudged best in the seminar on possible changes, which could be made in the NCC to meet challenges in 2020. "One of our suggestions was that the number of camps be brought down as a lot of academic time is lost. Training camps could, instead, be merged," said Team member Lt. Dolly Thomas.

Her essay on `Critical appraisal of the role of NCC in HRD' won the first place. Ms. Thomas, from the History department of Stella Maris College said the team would submit its proposals to the Director General of NCC in New Delhi.

Over 300 cadets took part in the camp.
