TAMBARAM: A 28-year-old woman was crushed to death on the spot while her husband and son had a miraculous escape when a speeding lorry hit their motorcycle near the State Express Transport Corporation Bus bay on the Grand Southern Trunk Road at Tambaram on Friday. Though the lorry driver tried to escape from the spot, he was stopped near a police check post a little ahead and was arrested. The victim, Nalini, 28, her husband Ramesh and their son, residents of Bhashyam Nagar in Adambakkam were on their way to a relative's house in Irumbuliyur to attend a house warming function. Around 1.30 p.m., the motorcycle was hit by the lorry that was on its way to a stone-crushing unit in Unamanchery village near Vandalur.
High speeding lorries
Eyewitnesses said the lorry was travelling in such a high speed that it could not have been possible to bring the vehicle to a halt. The entire stretch from the State Express Transport Corporation bus bay till the one for mofussil buses further ahead is a bottleneck any time of the day, particularly during the peak hours. With hawkers taking over pavements, pedestrians are forced to walk on the road. Nalini is the latest victim in a never-ending series of fatal accidents on the highways involving heavy vehicles, particularly tipper and sand lorries.
