Chennai: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala released a documentary film on the Maruthu brothers on Friday. M.A. Chinna Maruthu, the heir of king Periya Maruthu, received the first copy of the CD.

The film, produced by C. Deenathayalapandian, is a presentation of the revolt led by the Maruthu kings against the British rule in south Tamil Nadu. It also questions the veracity of the claim that the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 is the first war of independence.

The producer reasons that the mutiny was an outcome of religious and caste-based issues while the Maruthu brothers led a natural uprising of democracy-loving people.

The British hanged the brothers at Tirupathur in October of 1801.
