CHENNAI : Students of various engineering colleges of the city and neighbouring districts have come up with nearly fifty projects on `Technology for Rural Development.' They presented the projects as part of a seminar organised by the NSS Cell of Anna University on Friday. Seven out of these were chosen as best proposals and would be submitted to the State and Central governments for evaluation and implementation, said S. Selladurai, Coordinator of the NSS wing of all Tamilnadu engineering colleges. "Besides giving them exposure to the problems in rural areas, this seminar also gives them an opportunity to work as a team and improve their communication skills," he said adding "most of the participants are first and second year students." There were two participants in each team. The chosen proposals covered topics such as `solar-powered street lamps,' `bio-diesel fuel,' `low-cost sanitary napkins,' `efficient organic waste management' and natural dyes for clothing. "We spoke to many NGOs to find out the issues in rural areas that need to be addressed immediately. Based on the feedback , we listed all the possible topics, from which students chose what they found most interesting," said Mr. Selladurai. A few students also chose other topics of their interest and made presentations, he added.
