Shimoga
Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA: Prasar Bharati Board Chairman M.V. Kamath said here on Saturday that the board is planning to publicise the cultural history of India of the past 150 years through the Doordarshan by taking 1857 as the cut-off date. Participating in a meet-the-press programme organised by the Shimoga District Working Journalists' Association, he said Doordarshan has offered to take up the responsibility of producing 520 episodes to be telecast five days a week over 104 weeks in a bid to acquaint viewers with the cultural history of India. "We have to identify important events that took place during the past 150 years and do careful research before telecasting the episodes," he said. To a query, he said only Doordarshan is ready to telecast such a programme. He said it has also been proposed to produce serials on cultural events in all the 53 commonwealth countries. Asked whether he is satisfied with the way Doordarshan is functioning, he said: "Please don't ask this question." He agreed with a journalist that much needs to be done to make Doordarshan professionally competent. Recalling his career as a foreign correspondent of several newspapers, Mr. Kamath said the assignments were challenging and exciting as well. Noting that India has been making phenomenal progress, particularly in science and technology, he said what has made this possible is the knowledge of English among Indians. M. Nagendra Rao, president of the journalists' association, presided over the function. S. Siddappa, general secretary, welcomed the gathering. Y.G. Jagdish proposed a vote of thanks.
