Civic staff to disrupt

council meetings

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Workers and Employees' Union have decided to lay siege to meetings of all municipal councils on March 30 and 31 in support of their demands.

The State committee of the union, which took the decision, called upon members to disrupt meetings and press for solutions to their problems, B. Janardhan, president, and other leaders said in a press release here on Saturday. The demands include payment of salaries through treasury, payment of minimum wages to contract staff and implementation of G.O.s and assurances given by officials. - Special Correspondent

Singareni employees

serve strike notice

HYDERABAD: The Singareni Collieries Employees' Union has served a notice on the management indicating that the staff of all mines and opencast and surface departments will go on strike on March 22.

B. Bikshmaiah, general secretary, said in a press release on that the strike was called to press ten demands of the employees, including one-time payment of the Seventh Wage Agreement arrears before March 31.

The demands include implementation of the wage agreement after correcting anomalies, increasing the PF interest rate to 9.5 per cent, scrapping payment of pension through IDBI among others. - Special Correspondent

Police exchange

fire with naxals

WARANGAL: The police exchanged fire with the Praja Prathighatana group of naxals near Urattam forest area in Tadvai mandal here.

According to the information reaching here, a group of policemen during combing operations spotted five to six naxals reportedly belonging to Suresh dalam of Praja Prathighatana group. However, there were no casualties and no recoveries. - Staff Reporter

Villagers protest

with man's body

ADILABAD: Family members of a tribal, who died allegedly due to police harassment on Friday afternoon at Itkyal village in Khanapur mandal, staged a dharna with the body in front of the Khanapur MRO office on Saturday. They were demanding action against the police officer responsible for Banavath Govind's death and an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs.

According to reports, Govind was summoned to the police station by SI Shankar Reddy for questioning on his alleged involvement in distilling illicit liquor. On Friday afternoon he suddenly collapsed near an STD booth and died. Family members alleged that he died due to injuries sustained in police beating. - Staff Reporter

Additional RTC

bus services

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation's Ranga Reddy region has introduced two additional bus services on the Hyderabad-Nagpur route.

The two Hi-tech buses that will operate to Nagpur every day and back will be from the Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station here at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., to reach Nagpur and 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. respectively. In the return direction, they will start from Nagpur at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to reach Hyderabad at 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. respectively. The fare for adults is Rs.367 per head while that for children will be Rs.184 per head. - Staff Reporter

Washerman drowned

in KC Canal

KURNOOL: A washerman, identified as Modumiyya, 60, was drowned in the KC Canal near Johrapuram in the city on Saturday. According to reports, Modumiyya who rescued two children and a woman from drowning could not swim ashore. Two boys — Rajesh and Mahesh Babu — and a woman Sunkulamma reached the shore safely but Modumiyya could not as all victims clasped him causing him to choke. - Staff Reporter
