Family of eve teasing victim gets succour

Collector's gesture to a poor family

NAGERCOIL: A Dalit family, affected by eve teasing, at Vazavilai near Padmanabhapuram in Kanyakumari district, is elated after one of its family members got appointment as office assistant at District Implementation Unit (Tsunami), thanks to the efforts of Collector Sunil Paliwal. The order, dated February 27, was handed over to him on Saturday.

Sudha, 14, daughter of Suseela and Ayyappan, a ninth standard student of Government Higher Secondary School, Kalkulam, committed suicide by consuming poison on June 6, 2001, after she was teased by Nagarajan, 23, of the same area while going to school. After her death, her parents became mentally ill. The responsibility of maintaining the affected family rested on their elder son, Rajan. He ran from pillar to post to bear the medical expenses of his parents and run the family as well. Finally, he handed over a memorandum to the Collector, seeking employment in any government department so that he could at least ensure the medical expenses of his parents.

On humanitarian grounds, even after receiving 120 applications for the post of office assistant, the Collector issued orders to this candidate and one more person, whose father was killed when the giant waves hit the coastal district on December 26, 2004.

Speaking to The Hindu , Rajan said, "I did not know what should be done to save the lives of my parents. But after handing over the petition to the Collector and getting an assurance from him, I heaved a sigh of relief."

Rajan has appealed to the Chief Minister to provide a permanent job in any government department.
