HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad police will undertake a special drive from March 15 to ensure all drivers of the State Road Transport Corporation (RTC) complied with the seat belt rule. Stating that nearly 90 per cent of car drivers and front seat occupants were wearing seat belts, Traffic Police Additional Commissioner A.K. Khan on Saturday told a press conference that efforts would be made to increase the compliance level among RTC drivers. A random inspection had shown that a considerable number of policemen also were not following traffic related rules and regulations, he said. Recently, special teams of the traffic police inspected 1,090 policemen, including Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors and constables. Out of them, 78 were found violating different rules like not wearing helmets and possessing documents. "We wrote to the Deputy Commissioners of Police concerned about these violations and asked to initiate action against them," Mr. Khan said.
Focus on enforcement
Another study covering 200 persons who violated traffic rules projected that majority of them were well educated. While 168 of them were graduates and post-graduates, 20 studied up to intermediate. "The fact that a large number of educated persons are violating rules suggests that we should focus more on enforcement of rules than educating people," he added.
