Bangalore: Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda has regretted that the resources in the country are not being properly utilised. He was speaking after inaugurating the newly constructed stadium on Jnana Bharati campus here on Saturday. The Minister also laid the foundation stones for an apiary and the departments of Apparel Technology, Commerce, Management, Visual Arts and Electronic Media. Mr. Gowda said after agriculture, apparel technology and textiles were the second largest sector in the country. "First, it was just IT (information technology) and BT (biotechnology). We now have AT (apparel technology). I am happy that Bangalore University is promoting the sector," he said. At present, the sector earned Rs. 6,500 crores, and according to rough estimates by 2012, it would bring in at least Rs. 20,000 crores, the Minister said. The Minister said he was glad to know that the university had not forgotten to give due importance to physical education. Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University M.S. Thimmappa said a university should give equal importance to the development of body, mind and soul. The respective departments, by introducing new and innovative courses, had earned the new buildings. The curriculum for a postgraduate degree in apiculture was ready. Women's studies was slowly gaining importance. It had to as the future of the country was in the hands of women. These departments were the future of the university, he said. R.M.N. Sahai, Registrar, said a long-felt need for new centres for the departments had been fulfilled. He said that the infrastructure in the university had developed tremendously under the leadership of Dr. Thimmappa. The stadium had been constructed at a cost of Rs. 55 lakhs, while Rs. 5.76 crores had been earmarked for the construction of the building that would house the departments of Commerce and Electronic Media, Rs. 1.99 crore would be spent for the building to house the Department of Apparel Technology and Rs. 22 lakhs for the apiary. Dr. Thimmappa was felicitated by the various departments on the occasion. T.A. Parthasarathy, Registrar (Evaluation), delivered a vote of thanks.
