dated March 13, 1956: Akalis accept proposal

The General Council of the Shiromani Akali Dal on March 11 gave general approval to the principles of the Government plan for the reorganisation of the Punjab State. According to the Government proposals Punjab and PEPSU are to be merged to form a bilingual State (without Himachal Pradesh) with Punjabi-speaking and Hindi-speaking regions, Gurmukhi being the official language of the Punjabi-speaking region and Hindi of the Hindi-speaking region. The Regional Council's decision would be binding on the Cabinet by convention and there would be one Legislature, one Governor, one Public Service Commission and one High Court. According to the plan, all members of the Legislature and the Ministers from the respective zones will form the Zonal Councils. The Chief Minister will not be a member of any Zonal Council.
