Melting pot of ideas and enterprise

Coimbatore: Once MBA students get into the profession, they forget all about their corporate social responsibility, says G. Senthil Kumar, a student of Agriculture and Rural Management at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). Having cleared the prelims of the `best management team' contest, an elated Mr. Senthil says: "Students are only interested in getting into corporate companies. They do not discharge their duties as social beings." The intercollegiate management meet organised recently by the D.J. Academy for Managerial Excellence was a melting pot of new ideas and enterprise. Eager students thronged the corridors of the College where the prelims of the competition were held.

"Some of the events such as the `best manager' help you do a quick self-evaluation. You know where you stand among the MBA students from other colleges," says G. Dhanapal, also from TNAU. "With corporate giants, banks and insurance companies breaking new ground in the agri-based sector, Coimbatore has a vast job potential for MBAs and certainly those with a background in agricultural and rural studies stand a better chance," Senthil adds.

Urban segment

However, students still prefer to seek employment in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune where corporates cater more to the urban segment, says G. Satheesh Maradani of TNAU.

A group of students from K.S.R College of Technology, Tiruchengode, feel that such management programmes should be held frequently and made part of the curriculum. "The Anna University lays more emphasis on text-book based curriculum. These kind of programmes expose us to the competition awaiting us in the job market," says A.B.C. Dinesh of K.S.R. College and his classmate Chandrasekar adds: "We are in class from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. But, participating in management-related programmes makes us more competent."

`Best manager' tested students for their ability to handle real life situations. The participants were greeted with a volley of questions on just about anything.

This programme also demanded that the students have a fair knowledge of current affairs.

Nelson Mathew of Sri Krishna School of Management felt that the organisers could have included events such as `dumb charades,' which would have add a dash of variety to the usual pattern. "For instance, giving the catch line of a brand and asking students to find out the brand would be very interesting," he observed.

Twenty-five colleges from in and around Coimbatore participated.
