Awareness programme on cardiac diseases

MADURAI: `Cardio 2006', a comprehensive public awareness programme on cardiac diseases, was organised by the Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) in Madurai on Sunday.

The meet, inviting cardiac surgeons from various places, was held to mark the completion of three years of the Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery at the MMHRC, and as part of Continuing Medical Education Programme.

Renowned cardiac surgeon from Chennai, K.M. Cherian, who was the guest of honour, gave an overview about congenital heart surgery in the country and also highlighted the scene of paediatric cardiac surgery.

P. Chandrasekaran, cardiac surgeon from Coimbatore, spoke about vascular diseases while V.Irai Anbu, Commissioner for Disciplinary Proceedings, Madurai, threw light on what the public expects from doctors.

V.N.Rajasekaran, Medical Director, MMHRC and N.Krishnamurthy, Academic Director of the hospital, were among those who spoke at the meet.

A.R.Raghuram, Head of Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, in his annual report observed that more than 9,000 cardiac surgeries were performed in the hospital in the last three years. A latest technique called `endoscopic vein harvesting' was also introduced in the hospital recently, Dr. Raghuram said.
