Thanjavur: The fear created in the wake of suspected incidents of avian flu surfacing in Maharashtra had not only led to fall in sales of chicken and eggs, but also their prices in Thanjavur. With the bird flu fear slowly dying down, people have gradually started relishing chicken and egg products. In a bid to ensure that the state was free from influenza, the government had taken all steps like educating people about the disease which had made people cautious. The fear about avian flu is also slowly vanishing. The demand was good on Sunday. S.B.Ravi, a chicken vendor of Keelavasal, said that the price is only Rs.30 a kg. Before the incidence of avian flu, the rate was Rs. 60 per kg. As the sales have come down, the traders have lowered the prices to lure customers."Nearly 200 chicken were sold in two hours in the morning. More and more are rushed to the shop as the demand is high," said Ravi. He brings chicken from Pollachi, Palani, Palladam and Ottanchathiram. A lorry load carries 1,500 chicken. Eggs are also sold at a lower price. Previously an egg was sold at Rs.1.50. Now, the price of a dozen eggs is Rs.10. He reminded about the scare generated among the people about eating marine products after the tsunami and the efforts taken to prove that eating fish was safe."People were afraid of avian flu when it struck. Now they are out of fear," Ravi said.
