Call for end to Mala-Madiga row

Special Correspondent

Political parties blamed for ill-will between the two communities

AMONG FRIENDS: Mala Mahanadu State president J. Prabhakar Rao (extreme left) with Udith Raj, member of National Integration Council, and Joginder Kawade, former MP of Republican Party of India, at a rally in Hyderabad on Sunday.

HYDERABAD : Animal Husbandry Minister G. Surya Rao on Sunday raised his voice against all parties, including the ruling Congress, for failure to bring about a compromise between the warring Malas and Madigas in the State.

Addressing a public meeting organised by Mala Mahanadu at Nizam College grounds here on Sunday, the Minister asked parties across the spectrum whether there was a single instance where the Madigas were duped on account of Malas. It was the demand for categorisation of SCs on the ground that Malas ate into the share of Madigas in reservations which caused mental harassment to the former, he said.

Naidu under fire

Mr. Surya Rao blamed former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for sowing the seed of hatred between the two communities by enacting the legislation to categorise SCs in 1997.

The recommendation of the Ramachandra Raju Commission, which was the basis for the legislation, was full of blunders, he said.

The Commission was asked to submit its report within 30 days although panels constituted decades earlier to go into the same issue could not come to any conclusion so far, he added.

He advised Malas to remain calm in the wake of stepped up agitation by Madiga leadership on categorisation.

National Integration Council member and president of Indian Justice Party Udith Raj described Mr. Naidu as the main enemy of dalits.

He said his party was deeply involved in the struggle for reservations in promotions for SCs but it did not get any support from Andhra Pradesh because the Malas and Madigas were bogged down with their own conflict.
