HISTORICAL: The main entrance to the Boloor Mariyamma Temple at Urva in Mangalore.
MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada is known for people-centric temples. The Boloor Mariyamma Temple at Urva, which is celebrating its annual "jatra", is perhaps the best example of temples built by ordinary people - fishermen. Having a 600-year history, the temple has been dedicated to Mariyamma who is the deity of fishermen. They reserve a part of their earnings for this deity. The way they offer their earnings is also unique. The gold pendants and necklaces they collectively offer are in the shape of fishes such as "bangude sara" (mackerel necklace), "bhutayi sara" (sardine), "seegadi sara" (prawn) and "maanji sara" (pam-fret). Leader of fishermen and chief trustee of the temple Gopalakrishna Suvarna said there were instances when fishermen prayed for a good season, particularly after a fish famine, and the sea providing them with a good catch. Many fishermen recall such occasions. Fisherwomen, who pray for the safety of their men and children who venture into the sea, said they were witness to the calming effect their prayers had on the sea. Seven towns dominated by fishermen along the west coast offer pujas at the temple, Mr. Suvarna said.
