CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India, which supports the UPA Government from outside, has criticised Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko for forging an alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for the Assembly elections. CPI national secretary D. Raja told The Hindu here on Sunday that by his action, Mr. Vaiko had "negated all his political and ethical positions." The CPI criticism comes at a time when Mr. Vaiko has expressed his desire to continue in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance. While refraining from commenting on the MDMK's stand, Mr. Raja said Mr. Vaiko could not justify his decision to align with the AIADMK.
Left to counter BJP
The Left parties would launch an ideological battle against the attempts of the Bharatiya Janata Party to revive the "rath yatra tradition" in the wake of the Varanasi bomb blasts. BJP leader L.K. Advani's announcement in this regard showed that the party had not got out of the "yatra obsession." Dubbing the BJP's move an "attempt to fish in troubled waters," he said at a time when political parties had to adopt restraint and help people live in harmony, the party was trying to communalise the whole issue. "The BJP appears to be suffering from dearth of issues in the prevailing political scenario." Ever since the UPA came to power with Left support, many important political and economic policy issues had come to the focus unlike the previous National Democratic Alliance Government when the country had experienced communal tension all along, with the BJP "keen to push its Hindutva agenda." The BJP had announced the rath yatras against the backdrop of Assembly elections in some States, he said. "Obviously the BJP thinks that it can capitalise on the post-Varanasi blast situation. But people can see through its sinister designs." Even while calling upon the Government to put down any attempt to create law and order problem through rath yatras, Mr. Raja said the BJP move should be countered politically and ideologically.
