BELLARY: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has instructed officials of the Irrigation department to conduct a survey of 13 villages in Bellary taluk to provide irrigation facility. This information was given to presspersons here on Sunday by N. Suryanarayan Reddy, Kurgodu MLA. The 13 villages from Kuditini to Mincheri and Sanjeevarayanakote are considered a dry belt and the farmers depend on rain to raise crops. Due to vagaries of monsoon, the kharif crop always failed and the farmers suffered.
Appeal
"Residents of these villages had approached former Prime Minister seeking irrigation facilities. Mr. Deve Gowda had promised to look into the matter. Later Chief Minister Kumaraswamy responded positively to the petition given by the farmers in this regard," Mr. Reddy said. Officials are expected to survey the area and submit report after identifying the source. In all probability, river water is likely to be the source. Such a facility will approximately irrigate around 7,000 acres of land, he said. Mr. Reddy said that the Tungabhadra Board had agreed to install a gauging station for the low-level canal on the right bank of river Tungabhadra near Moka. He said the existing gauging station was on the State border. But the canal passes through villages in Andhra Pradesh prior to reaching the station. He said the work on installing the gauging station has been entrusted to a Pune-based agency and the work is expected to be completed in June this year.
Lift irrigation scheme
Mr. Reddy said that tenders will be invited for the lift irrigation scheme at Rupanagudi. Chaganur and Jalibench lift irrigation schemes are placed before authorities for final approval. Mr. Reddy said he will urge the Chief Minister and the Minister for Rural Development to initiate stern action against those found guilty of sub-standard work on water tank at Kurugodu.
