Van, car collide; boy killed

Three people were injured in the accident on East Coast Road

CHENNAI : A 13-year-old boy was killed after the van in which he was travelling collided head on with a car on the East Coast Road on Sunday afternoon. Three people were injured in the incident.

Mohan, a class VIII student of St. Thomas School, was in the front seat of the Mahindra van along with 20 others from Tiruverkadu.

According to the victims's uncle Palani, the group headed by their tuition teacher Loganathan, had headed to Mahabalipuram from Tiruverkadu in the morning.

"After visiting Mahabalipuram, they were going to a temple near Neelankarai when the car hit the van at Kanathur. Mohan died on the spot," he said.

According to the police, both vehicles were speeding along the middle of the road, which led to the collision.

"Both vehicles did not swerve and the van toppled sideways in the impact of the collision," said an official.

Loganathan and an eight-year-old boy are being treated at the Government Royapettah Hospital. The car driver also suffered injuries, said the police. The accident is under investigation.

Man drowned

A man fell into a well at Salt Quarters near Elephant Gate and drowned on Sunday morning.

Chakrapani, 45, a casual labourer, apparently slipped and fell into the 50-foot-deep well around 8.30 a.m. Residents of the area came to know of the incident around 10 a.m., according to the police. The Fire and Service Rescue personnel retrieved the body around 11 a.m.

Police are investigating the death.
