CHENNAI : Representatives of sanitary workers in the city and unorganised workers attended the culmination of the campaign yatra of temporary sanitary workers in Purasaiwalkam here on Friday. The campaign yatra began from Madurai last Monday to highlight the demands of temporary sanitary workers and pump operators of village panchayats. They have demanded permanent status for these categories of workers who have been made to work on temporary basis for several years. More funds for panchayats has also been demanded in the memorandum presented to the Chief Minister and other officials here on Friday morning. The recommendations of the public hearing on women sanitary workers by the National Commission for the Women have not been implemented so far because the State Commission for Women does not have a chairperson. The memorandum asks for immediate implementation of the recommendations and the exploring of alternatives to the underground drainage system.
Abolition of
child labour
Other demands include reversal of privatisation policies, land distribution to landless labourers, abolition of child labour and compulsory education and employment guarantee.
