MANGALORE: A meeting of deans of different departments of Mangalore University, representatives of the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT) and Association of First Grade College Principals of Mangalore University and others concerned has reportedly finalised a draft regulation to implement credit-based semester scheme for B.A., B.Sc. and B. Com. courses of the university.
Implementation
The meeting on Tuesday discussed in detail various aspects related to the implementation of the credit-based semester scheme for conventional degree courses. Tuesday's was the fifth meeting conducted by the university to sort out related issues before taking a final decision on the implementation of the scheme, university sources said. The university is likely to hold one more meeting with the representatives of students, subject associations and teachers on March 14. The draft regulation is likely to be placed in the Academic Council meeting on March 20 for its approval, sources said.
Approval
If all decision-making bodies of the university approve the same, it will be sent to the Governor for his approval. If the Governor, who is the Chancellor of the university approves it, the university will implement the scheme from the 2006-07 academic year, sources said. The meeting on Tuesday discussed, among other subjects, introduction of foundation subjects such as the Indian Constitution, women studies, human rights and environment and introduction of inter-disciplinary subjects including human resource development, communication skills, general science, cultural heritage and computer literacy.
Extra-curricular activities
It also deliberated on awarding of marks for extra-curricular activities such as participation in NSS, NCC, sports and cultural activities. The university, which introduced semester scheme for B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. courses in June 2004, withdrew it just after two months following opposition from the AMUCT and students. The AMUCT had stated that it is ready to cooperate with the university only if a credit-based semester scheme is implemented.
