Doctors observe fast

TIRUCHI : Members of the Doctors' Association For Social Equality (DASE) on Sunday observed a fast at Puthur Four Road junction here.

Led by Dr. V. Jeevanandham, president of the DASE, the doctors wanted the Government to regularise the services of physicians appointed on contract basis. They sought recruitment, based upon their seniority in registration either with the Employment Exchange or the Medical Council of India and not through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission.

They also demanded abolition of all-India quota for admission to medical courses and wanted the cancellation of the entrance examination conducted this year for admission to post-graduate courses, following "irregularities" in the examination.

1000 pirated CDs seized

Sleuths of the Video Piracy Cell seized over 1,000 pirated compact discs (CDs) of latest Tamil films during a raid conducted in the city on Saturday. The CDs were seized from two shops in Teppakulam Bazaar and Singarathope areas here. Two persons were arrested and remanded to custody.

Killed in road accident

A 31-year-old man was killed in a road accident at Mukkombu near here on Saturday night.

The police here said that Chandrasekhar of Musiri was proceeding towards Musiri, riding a two-wheeler when a van bound for Namanasamudram in Pudukottai district hit him killing him on the spot. The van has been seized.

Body found

The body of a man aged around 40 was found on the railway track between Ponmalai and Tiruchi town railway stations on Sunday. The identity of the deceased is not known. Government Railway Police sources said the man was run over by a train.

Held for uxoricide

A 40-year-old woman, Chinnammal, was allegedly murdered by her husband at their residence at Pethupatti near Pulivalam on Sunday. Suspecting her fidelity, P. Kandan (47) attacked her with a deadly weapon on the neck, the police said.

The body was recovered and sent to the Government Hospital at Thuraiyur for post-mortem.

Crocodile caught

An adult crocodile was caught by Fire and Rescue Service personnel at Navalpattu Pudhu Theru on Sunday. The residents alerted fire-fighters. A team of fire fighters, with the help of locals, caught the crocodile and later handed it over to officials of the Forest Department. The reptile was released in water bodies at Kallanai.

`Poochorithal' festival

Thousands of devotees from different parts of the State thronged the Samayapuram Sri Mariamman Temple near here and offered worship on the occasion of `Poochorithal' festival on Sunday.

About 100 baskets of flowers were taken out in a procession around the temple as part of the festival. The `Kaappu Kattudhal' ritual was followed by `pushbabhishekam' marking the commencement of the festival, which falls on the last Sunday of the Tamil month `Maasi'.

It also signifies the beginning of a holy fast by Sri Amman for the welfare of devotees. The fast concludes on the first Tuesday in the month of Chithirai, when the 13-day car festival will begin.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 113.58 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 3,495 cusecs and the outflow 1,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.
