Thiruvananthapuram: The Chamber of Commerce, Thiruvananthapuram alleged here on Sunday that the Union Government had come under pressure from vested interests to shift the office of the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) from the capital city. In a pressnote issued here on Sunday, the Chamber said Thiruvananthapuram was the ideal location for the office since 80 per cent of vegetables and farm products from Kerala and the southern districts of Tamil Nadu were exported through the international airport here. It said the operations of the DGFT office would assume more importance once the Vizhinjam container terminal becomes operational. "Shifting the facility would lead to a crisis in the import- export sector. Exporters would be forced to travel long distances to other DGFT offices for licences ad other formalities," it pointed out. The press note alleged that the same forces trying to torpedo the Vizhinjam project were behind the move to shift the DGFT facility. The Chamber submitted a memorandum to Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath in this regard.
