Celebration of Gaura Poornima at ISKCON temple today

Bangalore: ISKCON temple here will celebrate Gaura Poornima from 6.45 p.m. on Tuesday. It marks the birth anniversary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 15th century saint who appeared in West Bengal and invigorated the Bhakti movement.

ISKCON is considered a contemporary version of Chaitanya's movement to propagate the teachings of Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatham. Chaitanya's message was to invite every one regardless of caste, creed and gender to participate in spiritual emancipation which otherwise was regarded the prerogative of the elite of the then caste-ridden Indian society.

ISKCON temple has life size idols of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. A grand "pallaki utsav" will be organised to take the idols on flower-bedecked palanquins.

This will be followed by an elaborate and grand "abhisheka" comprising a variety of fresh fruit juices, honey, milk, curd and ghee with a grand finale during which 30 varieties of fresh, fragrant flowers of all colours are showered.

Arati such as "Eka arati," "Pancha arati" and "Hanumad arati" will also be offered.

Hundreds of devotees are expected to perform the "Hari nama sankirtan" by chanting "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare... " a practice followed by hundreds of devotees all over the world.

This year's Gaura Poornima marks the 520th anniversary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the 40th anniversary of Prabhupada starting the ISKCON movement.
