Congratulations!

Every Indian cricket lover is proud of spinner Anil Kumble who became the first Indian to claim 500 test wickets. He has always been admired for his exemplary behaviour on the field and is a true representative of the gentleman's game.

Kumble's contribution to Indian cricket is immense. He has been overlooked a few times in the past but has always bounced back. He has lived up to his reputation of being the `smiling assassin.'

Hats off to Kumble for his historic feat. When he began his career, there were doubts about his ability as a spinner because he was not a big turner of the ball. But he did not give up and gradually developed his own style to which batsmen had no answer. He proved his critics wrong. His hard work and tenacity paid off.

It is great to see an unconventional spinner joining the exclusive club of bowlers who have claimed 500 test wickets. Apart from being a great bowler, Kumble is also a perfect gentleman. His on and off field behaviour is impeccable.

Bijan Kumar Mahapatra,
Hyderabad
