Lunar eclipse tomorrow
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI
: A penumbral lunar eclipse awaits astronomers on March 15. During the event, the moon will cross through the Earth's outer shadow region or the penumbra.
Unlike a total lunar eclipse, there is no obvious change in the moon.
The colour changes are very subtle while in a total eclipse the moon turns rusty brown or red.
Lunar eclipses are safe to view. The eclipse starts at 2.51 a.m. and ends at 7.43 a.m. IST on March 15. Lunar eclipses, like solar eclipses, belong to a centuries-long series.
The eclipse belongs to the Saros 113. Because the Moon's orbit around the Earth is inclined 5 degrees with respect to the orbit of the Earth around the Sun, lunar eclipses do not occur at every full moon.
Meanwhile, M.S. Pachayappa Mudaliyar, publishers of the Hindu almanac, have said since the lunar eclipse will not be visible over India, the Hindu rituals associated with the eclipse including `snanam,' `tharpanam' and `pariharam' need not be performed.
They have added that "Pournami Thithi Srardam" could be performed on Tuesday and "Pratamai Thithi Srardam" on Wednesday.
