End discrimination against Dalits: Prakash Khandre

Staff Correspondent

`Untouchability Eradication Week' inaugurated

Bidar: "It is a matter of shame that some people still discriminate against Dalits," Prakash Khandre, MLA, said here on Monday.

Inaugurating "Untouchability Eradication Week" at Yarnalli village in Bhalki taluk, Mr. Khandre said the country's social development is not as fast as its economic and political development. He urged the people to follow the teachings of Basaveshwara and other saints. "Basaveshwara mooted the idea of a caste-less and class-less society. B.R. Ambedkar gave it a form of law. We need to follow their ideals," he said.

He said incidence of untouchability has reduced after the reform measures initiated by institutions such as Bhalki Math.

Deputy Commissioner Munish Moudgil said the district administration will strictly enforce anti- untouchability laws. "The law provides for criminal action against those practising discrimination. I however, urge the people to change their mindset and actions in such a way that we need not enforce such laws," he added. Samudaya Kalavidaru presented a dance drama on untouchability.
