Security stepped up for Holi

Staff Reporter

Police may make preventive detentions

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police have stepped up security in the Capital in view of Holi this Wednesday. The city is already on "high alert" in the wake of the bomb blasts in Varanasi this past week. The police in all the nine districts have been directed to keep a close watch on mischievous elements and make preventive detentions if necessary. "Preventive action is being taken against those with criminal past. As a precautionary measure, teams have been formed to conduct checks in buses. Extra pickets have been set up to check rash driving," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) Devesh Srivastava.

The police have analysed distress calls received by the Police Control Room during Holi in the past two years to identify areas where most cases of violence are reported. "On the basis of the findings, we are deploying extra force in these pockets. We have also been provided with para-military personnel for round-the-clock patrolling," he said.

Public meetings involving leaders of different communities are being held at various places and people are being urged to maintain peace in their areas. They have also been asked to inform the police in case they come across any suspicious activity. The police are also informing people about Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code under which assembling of more than four persons at a place is banned. "Police personnel were deployed at colleges that were open on Monday. Apart from local women staff, those from the Crime Against Women cell have also been deployed to check eve-teasing," said the police officer.
