Congress holds talks on Rajya Sabha polls
Special Correspondent
Bangalore:
Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh and President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge met Congress President Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Monday and discussed selection of a second candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. According to reports reaching here, the Congress is banking on the support of Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs who are with former Deputy Chief Mminister Siddaramaiah and call themselves the All-India Progressive Janata Dal group. Group leaders have said they will announce their decision on the Rajya Sabha elections on March 17, the last date for filing nominations.
The Congress is thinking of fielding a person from outside the party ranks, preferably an industrialist who will be able to win over independents and members of smaller parties who hold the key in the election of candidates without an assured vote base. Opposition is stated to have built up in the Bharatiya Janata Party to supporting an industrialist for the second seat, with a good number of MLAs favouring a person who has worked for the party.
