Help out farmers, Gehlot tells Govt.

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot has drawn the attention of the Rajasthan Chief Minister to the recent crop damage due to the unseasonal rains and hailstorm in the State as well as the problems faced by the farmers in selling mustard at the minimum support price (MSP).

"Extensive damage to crops has been reported in Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, Alwar, Bhilwara, Bikaner, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Barmer, Baran, Bharatpur and other districts in the recent past due to untimely rains and hailstorm. The farmers are in a state of desperation after the heavy losses incurred by them in the current crop season," Mr. Gehlot said in a statement here on Monday.

"The Government should ask the district Collectors to furnish report on the damages in their respective districts and compensation should be provided to farmers on a priority basis," Mr. Gehlot said.

On the mustard procurement front Mr. Gehlot said the harvest this season had been good but the farmers were yet to benefit from it as there was no proper arrangement for buying the produce at MSP as well as for payment of the remuneration on time. The farmers were being forced to sell their produce to the middlemen at prices lower than MSP, he said.
