MPLADS: MPs may face suspension

Neena Vyas

Could be tabled in the Lok Sabha today

  • Committee may not have found conclusive evidence of corruption
  • MPs involved may be suspended from Lok Sabha
  • Procedure following report on cash-for-queries scandal likely to be followed

NEW DELHI: The Kishore Chandra Deo Committee, set up following a sting operation exposing corruption in the implementation of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme, is believed to have submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. It may be tabled on Tuesday.

Fagan Singh Kulaste, Chandra Pratap Singh, Ram Swaroop Koli (all Bharatiya Janata Party), Churchill Alemao (Congress) and Paras Nath Yadav (Samajwadi Party) were caught in the sting operation, which was televised on news channels. Mr. Singh was expelled from the Lok Sabha as he was also caught in the cash-for-queries scandal.

It seems the Committee did not find conclusive evidence of corruption and the MPs may be let off with the recommendation for a sentence lighter than the "expulsion" of those involved in the cash-for-queries sting operation.

These five MPs (or rather four, as one has already been expelled) may be suspended from the Lok Sabha for the rest of the budget session, including the post-recess period, or the suspension may be limited to the remaining part of the first part of the session that ends on March 22.

It is likely that the "procedure," adopted after the report on the cash-for-queries scandal was submitted, will again be adopted. Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee could move a resolution recommending that the House adopt the recommendations of the Committee. The matter could be discussed and put to vote.

It is not yet clear when this would happen.
