Chromepet residents feel short-changed

TAMBARAM : Residents of New Colony, Chromepet, on Monday alleged short measurement of milk in Aavin `packets' they purchased from "distributors."

The problem of short measurement and leaking packets was first noticed two weeks ago. They did not attach much importance to it hoping that it was temporary. However, it had become a regular feature, forcing them to complain to the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation.

Members of the Chromepet New Colony Residents Welfare Association said at least a dozen residents in the locality were supplied sachets that were either leaking or contained milk that was much lesser than the stipulated quantity.

According to the association's office-bearers , the problems were found only in 500 ml packets of Aavin Nice, priced at Rs. 6.25 .

Some days ago, residents checked the quantity of a sachet, which they suspected to contain less than the stipulated volume, and were shocked to find out that there was only about 350 ml in the half-litre `packet.'

Incidentally, it was a vendor door-delivering the Aavin packets to the residents, who brought the matter to the association following complaints from several of his customers.

When contacted, Aavin officials said they had received the complaint and it had been forwarded to the department concerned and would be attended to soon.

The association said there were several private milk manufacturers and in the present times of intense competition, Aavin should attend to the problem immediately and ensure that it did not occur again.
