Non-communicable Diseases Network launched

Staff Reporter

Training programmes and screening camps will be held

CHENNAI: The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) here on Thursday launched the Indian Non-communicable Diseases Network to bring together experts on the subject.

The MDRF president V. Mohan said that the network would improve awareness of non-communicable diseases (NCD) and its control in India. The network was launched at a training seminar organised by the MDRF and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), with support from the National Institutes of Health, USA.

Training programmes on NCDs and screening camps would be some of the activities of the network. This year's seminar is the fourth in a series of teaching programmes conducted by MDRF and the UAB. Inaugurating the seminar, Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. P. Thyagarajan said video-conferencing and tele-education methods could be used to reach out to persons working in the field of NCDs.

G. Roglic, technical officer of the department of chronic diseases, World Health Organisation said that India was challenged with the "double burden" of being the country with the largest number of people affected by communicable and non-communicable diseases. India has the most number of persons with diabetes (NCD) and tuberculosis (communicable), she said. Dr. Roglic said that this challenge had to be addressed before it went out of hand. International and national experts will train participants from various States during the three-day seminar.
