Two held for betting racket

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly running a betting racket.

Following a tip-off, a raid was conducted at the hideout of the two suspects at Shalimar Bagh in North-West Delhi on Sunday. The accused have been identified as Charanjit Paul alias Bobby and Murli Kumar. The police recovered mobile phones, recording instruments, a television set and Rs. 4,250 in cash from them.

During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to accepting bets on the India-England cricket test match and Australia-South Africa one-day international. Most of their customers were from Rohtak and Jhajjar in Haryana.

K.K. Birla Fellowship for Dr. Deshpande

New Delhi: Dr. L.S. Deshpande, former Principal of Pratibha Niketan College, Nanded, has been selected for the K.K. Birla Foundation Fellowship in Comparative Indian Literature for this year.

Dr. Deshpande will take up the study of contemporary Indian theatre involving Hindi, Bangla, Kannada and Marathi drama, said the K. K. Birla Foundation here.

Writer Nabneeta Dev Sen headed the selection board, which also comprised Sahitya Akademi Secretary K. Satchidanandan.

The one-year fellowship carries a tax-free stipend of Rs. 14,000 per month and a contingency grant of Rs. 40,000.

As many as 21 fellows have completed their studies since the fellowship was instituted in 1994 for higher studies in the field of Comparative Indian Literature.

The studies of ten of the fellows, including those of Malayalam poet Prof K Ayyappa Paniker and Tamil novelist Ashokamitran, have already been published.
